{"id":616,"date":"2012-06-21T02:46:31","date_gmt":"2012-06-21T02:46:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.mindfulvoyagecounseling.net\/?p=616"},"modified":"2012-07-16T01:43:45","modified_gmt":"2012-07-16T01:43:45","slug":"mindful-eating-part-i","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.mindfulvoyagecounseling.net\/?p=616","title":{"rendered":"Mindful Eating Part I"},"content":{"rendered":"<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">We eat everyday because eating is a life supporting activity equally as essential as breathing, sleeping&#8230;etc.\u00a0 But unlike breathing and sleeping, eating presents us with choices.\u00a0 We have choices and options about what we eat, when we eat and how we eat.\u00a0 The food we choose has a direct impact on our physical and mental health.<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Our eating habits are learned in childhood and are influenced by culture, knowledge, and availability of food.\u00a0 Most people know what they like to eat and do so in their habitual ways. We are not always aware that the foods we choose and the way we eat can significantly impact mood, weight, medical conditions, and energy level.<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">We sometimes make poor choices because we eat on impulse or crave certain types of foods which may indicate addictions to sugar, fat and\/or salt.\u00a0 Like any addictions, a persons primary control lies in the action of putting the food in ones mouth.\u00a0 Once it is in our system we have no control over how that food will impact our body and mind.\u00a0 Therefore, practicing mindful eating will be helpful for developing control.\u00a0 This may help you to be free from impulses or poor choices.<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Anyone can choose to practice mindful eating. For example, when you feel hungry, you may imagine or think of certain kinds of food you desire.\u00a0 Take a few minutes to evaluate or become mindful of the choices before you decide to eat.\u00a0 Cravings are like moods, they come and go, but underlying these desires is the basic need to nourish your body.\u00a0 An example would be; If you feel like a certain kind of food, notice the thoughts of that craving.\u00a0 What is it saying to you?\u00a0 What do you think you will get from that choice.\u00a0 How will you feel after eating it?\u00a0 What do you really need?\u00a0 Next, see if you can imagine substituting that choice with a healthier option that could fulfill your needs.\u00a0 It is still fine if you decide to eat what you originally wanted.\u00a0 The important key of this practice is to develop the habit of pausing and making your decisions each step of the way.\u00a0 As with all practices, this can be difficult in the beginning, but it will get easier as you continue to be mindful.<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We eat everyday because eating is a life supporting activity equally as essential as breathing, sleeping&#8230;etc.\u00a0 But unlike breathing and sleeping, eating presents us with choices.\u00a0 We have choices and options about what we eat, when we eat and how we eat.\u00a0 The food we choose has a direct impact on our physical and mental [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_monsterinsights_skip_tracking":false,"_monsterinsights_sitenote_active":false,"_monsterinsights_sitenote_note":"","_monsterinsights_sitenote_category":0},"categories":[1],"tags":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v16.1.1 -
